The Foundation
For over twenty years the frescoed halls of Castel Madruzzo (15 km from Trento, in the North-East of Italy) have welcomed important international meetings on social, medical and scientific themes.

The opinions of many great men who, even in the remotest corners of the earth, dedicate their knowledge to the service of man's primary source of wellbeing - his health - have echoed through its vaulted rooms.

It is here, in one of the few privately-owned castles in the region, that Prof. Mario Emanuele Bianchetti wished to install the headquarters of the Incontri di Madruzzo Foundation, whose statute emphasises that it will "… hold as its exclusive aim social solidarity in terms of the promotion of the Health of Mankind" .

The promotion of Health in all its facets has always been at the heart of the fora that the Foundation has promoted at international level, bringing together experts from the most varied disciplines, including, most certainly, but not by any means limited to members of the medical fraternity, along with decision-makers and experts in social, organisational, economic, political, ethical and even philosophical spheres in order to build on the core message of the Foundation: Health, being Man's primary and foremost good can only be safeguarded and improved when recognised as being a determining factor in development in general.

Through meetings, conferences, seminars, interdisciplinary events and the development of innovative projects, the Incontri di Madruzzo Foundation has contributed towards the identification of new approaches and co-ordination strategies, transmitting the wealth of experience gained in various international environments in papers presented to the most appropriate institutional bodies.

It is in recognition of these values and of the perseverance of Prof. Mario Emanuele Bianchetti that the European Union has frequently involved the Foundation in the realisation of important initiatives aimed at spreading the principles of Health Promotion.

Over the years the Incontri di Madruzzo Foundation has held conferences and developed both local and international Health projects in collaboration with WHO (The World Health Organisation); in the period '93/'95, for example, with the co-operation of WHO Copenhagen, Yale University, The Office for Public Management (London), and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano(Italy), the Foundation set in motion what was, in fact, to become the prologue to The Verona Initiative.

From that early work emerged the initial guidelines regarding the most appropriate action to be undertaken in order to reinforce the foundations of the Health System, making use of its social components, through probing research into the yield on investments made and effective gains in terms of Health.

The large-scale project, carried out over three years (1998-2000) and successively called "The Verona Initiative" developed out of the gratifying earlier experience and the commitment of the Foundation in interpreting a new and highly important need felt by all European nations: that of having access to a new arena of debate with the active participation of representatives of the various governments along with the presence of major international co-operation Agencies.

Numerous other significant contributions in the field of Health have been made by the Incontri di Madruzzo Foundation in the course of the years, among the most noteworthy the ' Reform of the Health Reform in Italy in 1988, the study carried out for the development of the National Health Service in Italy and the ambitious project for the creation of a European Health System. In all of the above initiatives Nobel Prizewinners, Deans of major European and American Universities, politicians, scientists and Heads of Governments were involved.

The Incontri di Madruzzo Foundation is at present involved in the development of the Tahta Project (Trieste Action for Health Technology Assessment) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, the University of Trieste, Trieste Science Park and Ital Tbs SpA. Furthermore, the Foundation promotes activities with non-profit, non-governmental organisations and is collaborating on various programmes for the development and spread of Telemedicine, co-ordinating the different groups involved in these projects.
